The beginning of Sensei Prabhu’s Karate-Do dates back to the year 1983 when Vijayarama Prabhu a dedicated student of Dai Sensei Moses Thilak was awarded Sho-Dan Black Belt and was appointed as the instructor of the Kai Shien Kan Karate School. The Kai Shien Kan School of karate was started by Dai Sensei Mosses Thilak in the year 1978 at St. Cecilians arts club at Chullickal in Ernakulam district. As a senior most student from that school and among the 1st of keralites to achieve a Black Belt in Karate, Vijayarama Prabhu was shouldered with the responsibility of spreading Karate throughout the state.

In 1983 Kai Shien Kan School of Karate was rechristened as the Alan-Thilak Karate School, a joint venture by Sensei Alan and Sensei Thilak. The spirit of karate had spread like fire and the karate club had students from all nearby localities. The karate club had produced champions at all levels of competitions and in all categories. Alan-Thilak Karate School at Chullickal came to be known as the St. Cecilian Karate Club due to its influence in the locality of Chullickal. During P V Prabhu’s tenure as instructor at the St. Cecilian Karate Club, in 1986 he won the national championship in the National Karate Tournament held at Panjim, Goa. In 1987 the St. Cecilian Karate Club had performed on the occasion of 100th anniversary celebrations of Thirumala Dewaswom High School (TDHS) Mattanchery, with the motive of making this martial art known to the local Brahmin community. St. Cecilian Karate Club had produced many champions in different categories who have spread to different parts of the country and still move on with spreading the martial art.

After 10 years of training at St. Cecilians arts club, in 1993 the Karate Dojo (class) was moved to Bank House in Mattanchery. This change of place had a better reach to people and the Dojo had received overwhelming response from all the people. The Dojo was at Bank House for a short period of 5 years during which many demonstrations and on-road karate performances were carried out. By this time Sensei Prabhu Karate-Do had spread out its roots. His senior students had started Dojos at different places across the state. The Karate Club had emerged as champions in Ernakulam District Karate Championships. The students had won the Kerala State Championship representing the Ernakulam district. The students had also won prizes at National Championships.

Due to huge number of students and falling short of space to provide training to them the Dojo was moved to TDHS silver jubilee hall in 1998 with a motive of training more students. The Dojo became famous with its achievements and demonstration of karate power at different places. The Dojo was invited to perform every year on occasions of Vinayaka Chathurthi and Sri Krishna Jayanthi along the streets of Cochin. Due to the influence of karate on local people, the Dojo at TDHS came to be known as the TDHS Mattanchery Dojo. From 1998 till date the Dojo is at TDHS under Sensei Prabhu and still repeats its history of producing champions in karate. The Dojo is still active in conducting demonstrations and organising tournaments. The Dojo after performing for the 100th anniversary of TDHS in 1987 under Sensei Prabhu had again an opportunity in 2012 to perform for the 125th anniversary of the oldest school in the locality. Due to the fame of Sensei Prabhu among the people associated with karate and also among spectators and admirers of the art, his Dojos irrespective of places all commonly came to be known as Sensei Prabhu’s Karate Dojos or Sensei Prabhu Karate-Do.

After the death of our beloved Grand Master Dai Sensei Mosses Thilak in the year 2004, Sensei Prabhu along with senior masters started the Japan Karate Centre (International) which was earlier known as the Alan-Thilak Karate School at TDHS Mattanchery.

In 2017 Sensei Prabhu established INDIAN ACADEMY OF SHITO-RYU KARATE DO (INTERNATIONAL). Apart from moulding students to mere karate champions, the Dojo under the noble guidance of Sensei Vijayarama Prabhu aims at providing cultural and moral education to students. The education at our Dojo along with karate aims at moulding the students to better human beings with physical and mental stability. This helps them to withstand the difficulties of life and come out with flying colours.

Now in a time when elderly people have mistaken Karate as a deadly art that can be used only for destruction and youth have mistaken it as a child play for children’s entertainment. And when people knowing Karate are misusing the Martial art to extort money from people, while others are using Karate to exploit their students and extract money. Some declare themselves as Grandmasters of karate and acclaim to have achieved 9th and 10th DAN and even RED BELT in Karate. At this time when some people have contaminated karate by making use of the art for their benefit, Sensei Prabhu decided to remove the false beliefs from the elderly and the youth and to make available to all people the real Karate and its correct sources. With this motive a website of our Dojo is made available here for the public to educate them about the whereabouts of karate.
